SENIOR CITIZENS’ DAY

Once upon a time an eligible bachelor set out looking for a bride. His parents requested him to take the elders of the family with him. However, confident of his abilities, he declined and embarked on the journey along with his friends. Finally he happened to find the girl of his life. However, the elders of the girl’s family told him that if he passes their test, their girl would be given to him in marriage. Being in the seventh heaven upon finding his life partner, he readily agreed. They showed him a woven basket and asked him to fetch a basket of water from the nearby well! The youngster was in a predicament: how to fetch water in a basket full of holes? The question was absurd, but he had no alternative. Distraught, he returned home cursing his luck. When he narrated the story at home, his parents asked him to go back to the girl’s house and ask them to provide him a rope made of ash to fetch water!

The moral of the story is that our elders may be old and their knowledge may seem obsolete, but their wisdom is timeless. Consequently, they deserve not only a place in the society, but recognition of their wisdom and contribution to the society...and the Angelore chapter of SSVP decided to do just that.

On 30th July 2023 the SSVP organised Senior Citizens’ Day in honour of the senior citizens of the parish. The day began with celebration of Holy Eucharist at 11.00 a.m. which was preceded by confessions. After the celebration of the Holy Eucharist, a programme was organised at the Golden Jubilee Memorial Hall. In his presidential address, Rev. Fr William Menezes, Parish Priest, gave useful tips on living a happy retired life to the senior citizens. After the brief formal programme, the youth of the parish enthralled the elderly with their breathtaking dance. The veteran actors of the parish presented an entertaining show. Games were conducted for the gathering and the senior citizens of the parish enthusiastically participated in them. The programme concluded with sumptuous fellowship meal.
