The Catholic Church observes the feast of St. Cecilia, the patron of music, musicians, composers, instrument makers, and poets, on 22nd November. Legend has it that she was a noble Roman who vowed her virginity to God. She was married to Valerian against her will, who however respected her vow of virginity to God. It is said that she sang in her heart to the Lord as the musicians played at her wedding. In popular art she is portrayed playing the organ.
