For the people of Mangalore, the birthday of Mother Mary also coincides with the celebration of new agriculture produce. Unlike other feasts, this feast is strictly vegetarian. We also call it the feast of the family.
After offering flowers to Mother Mary for nine days, finally the day of celebrating her birthday arrived. At 7.45 a.m. the parishioners gathered at the Guardian Angel Higher Primary School for the blessing of the new produce. Thereafter the gathering proceeded to the church in procession. The gurkars of the ward carried the new produce. The Faithful partook in the celebration of the Holy Eucharist with great devotion. Rev. Fr Fredrick Monteiro, Parish Priest and Rev. Fr Stany Fernandes concelebrated the Holy Eucharist.
The members of the Parish Pastoral Council, gurkars and members of various organisations worked hand in hand shouldering various responsibilities. After the mass new produce was distributed to the parishioners. The other specialty of the day is distribution of sugarcane, which was volunteered by the members of Angelore Youth Movement. The members of Stree Sanghatan distributed the Mangalorean specialty ‘Vorn’.
