“In the end, it’s not the years in your life that count. It’s the life in your years,” said Abraham Lincoln. Indeed, it is the life in our years that keeps us going. And that is what keeps the senior citizens going with effervescence. They are a treasure trove of wisdom, knowledge and experience; there are umpteen stories – moral and real life – of these traits of our elderly that have saved the day of many a human being.
Therefore, it becomes imperative that we celebrate their life because they have brightened our lives selflessly contributing the welfare of the society in their own way, and made this world a happier place for us to live. To honour the senior citizens of the Parish, the Angelore Chapter of the Society of St. Vincent De Paul observed Elders’ Day on 4th August 2024.
The festivities began with the celebration of Holy Eucharist at 11.00 a.m. Confessions were arranged before the mass. Rev. Fr Fredrick Monteiro, Parish Priest, and Rev. Fr Stany Fernandes, Socius concelebrated the Holy Eucharist. This spiritual gathering was dedicated to appreciating the wisdom and contributions of the elderly. The liturgy was led by the senior citizens. The melodious choir aided the elderly in their praises to the Lord. In his beautifully worded homily, the Parish Priest related the elderly and their life of the elderly to Psalm 71.
Following the Mass, a celebration and lunch were organized at the Golden Jubilee Memorial Hall in Angelore. The senior citizens were led to the hall from the church in procession. The beautifully decorated hall was a fitting tribute to the stalwart of yesteryears and exuded a cordial atmosphere for the attendees. The Parish Priest cut the ribbon at the entrance of the hall and inaugurated the cultural programme. The members of SSVP welcomed the guests with roses.
In his Presidential address, Rev. Fr Fredrick Monteiro lauded the contribution of the elderly to the Parish and the society in general. He also proclaimed that they are the asset of their families and gems of the Parish.
The lively cultural programme was choreographed by SSVP, Family and Laity Commission in unison with the contribution of parishioners across all ages. The entertainment included dances and skits. Various games were organised to give the guests an opportunity to move around and mingle with others, and to elevate their spirit. Undoubtedly, these events brought joy and laughter to the guests.
Delicious fellowship meal was served by members of SSVP and volunteers of the parish, fostering a sense of togetherness and appreciation.
Mr. Ivan D’Silva, President of SVP welcomed the gathering. Mr. Noel Pinto, Secretary of Laity Commission, gave the Vote of Thanks. Mrs. Ida D’Mello, Secretary of SSVP entertained the guests with games. Mrs. Emmy Fernandes compèred the programme.
The celebration was a wonderful opportunity for the younger generations to express gratitude and learn from the experiences of their elders. It reinforced the values of community, respect, and care for one another. Overall, Elders Day at Angelore was a memorable event that highlighted the importance of acknowledging and celebrating the elders in our lives.
